Overview of IEC Registration

Expanding your business globally is a great opportunity in today’s competitive market, made easier by advancements in technology and the internet. However, to engage in international trade, certain procedures and registrations must be followed, with the Import Export Code (IEC) being one of the most crucial.

The IEC, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), is required for anyone involved in importing or exporting goods from India. It is a 10-digit lifetime code. Without this code, importers cannot bring goods into India, and exporters will not be able to avail benefits from various export schemes under the DGFT.

Procedure for IEC Registration

Follow these steps to complete your IEC registration in India:

  • Visit the DGFT’s official website, click on the ‘Services’ tab, and select ‘IEC Profile Management’.
  • On the next page, click ‘Apply for IEC’.
  • Select ‘Register’ and fill in the required details.
  • Request an OTP, enter the received OTP, and click the ‘Register’ button.
  • A notification with a temporary password will be sent. You can change this password on the DGFT website.
  • Log in to the DGFT website using the registered username and temporary password.
  • On the Dashboard, click ‘Apply for IEC’. If a draft application exists, choose to either ‘Start Fresh’ or ‘Proceed with Existing application’.
  • Complete the application form in ANF 2A format, filling in the necessary information in the ‘General Information’ section.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions by ticking the checkbox.
  • Review the application summary, sign it with a digital signature certificate, and confirm the details.
  • Make the payment for the application.
  • After processing, you’ll be redirected to the DGFT website where you can download the receipt for your records.
